A small heads up for my male readers: I will be getting into it a bit. You have been warned.

Pregnancy is no joke. I don’t think anyone really believes it is, but that just is how I’m feeling lately. I want to talk today about some really odd things about being pregnant. One thing I never want to have on this blog is complete horror stories or things that could scare women who are pregnant or want to become pregnant, so do not worry! This is not one of those pieces. My goal the past several months has been to have a low stress pregnancy, so we’re keeping upbeat.

But that hasn’t stopped my body from being freaking weird!

The first thing I noticed was something that I will write about another day. I wrote everything here, realized this is a public forum, and decided that I will create a little more of a private space for the really TMI details.

The second thing I noticed in pregnancy was that everything made me gag. The trash? Gagging over it. Dirty dishes? My husband needs to do them — I cannot. Chicken? Do not get me started on chicken. DISGUSTING. GAG. Seriously though, what is the point of this? It leads to physically getting sick sometimes if you don’t calm yourself fast enough. Sometimes you have no choice. It’s odd too because Baby makes you hate so many foods that should technically be good for you. I lived on bagels and soup, because that was what I could keep down. Everyone gave me the same advice — during the first trimester, just eat whatever you can and keep taking your prenatals. The baby will steal all the good stuff from you anyway (spoiler alert, I am in my second trimester and Baby completely took all my good stuff and is 97th percentile in size). It does strike me as odd, though, that my body was rejecting foods that would be really good for me, and allowing French fries and carbs only. Wouldn’t it make more sense to be disgusted by unhealthy things? To keep only healthy things down? Apparently that’s not how it works. I also didn’t realize that aversions were such a big thing. People always talk about cravings, but no one warned me of being disgusted by so much! I had almost no cravings during my entire first trimester (which, by the way, goes until 12 weeks). I was only disgusted by things and did not want to eat, but forced myself to so that I would help Baby grow.

Speaking of gagging, the clogged sinuses and bloody noses are odd! They are not horrible or anything, but are apparently are incredibly common in pregnancy. Like, what? I do not understand the purpose of these. It genuinely makes no sense.

Finally, the only universal thing I have found in pregnancy symptoms so far — the dreaded toothbrush. Oh my gosh. Brushing your teeth makes you want to throw up in the first trimester and I do not know why. If you haven’t been pregnant, you probably haven’t heard of this phenomenon. You need to just force it and spit often to avoid getting sick. Thankfully, it has basically stopped in the second trimester.

These are most of the weird, but non-concerning things about being pregnant during your first trimester. I will share some other details on a Substack or something at a later date.

As a side note, I am obsessed with the pregnancy apps telling you what size your baby is, so I am going to share those on here every week too. I found out I was pregnant at four weeks, and started taking pictures

Week four Baby was the size of a poppyseed. So tiny, but so sweet!
Week five was a peppercorn, which is significantly bigger than a poppyseed. If you drop a poppy on the floor it will be hard to find, but a peppercorn is not. Crazy how much they grow week to week.
Week six was a blueberry. Such a lil cutie! My hair was insane because I was so nauseous during this time, I honestly do not remember some of this time.
Week seven was a raspberry. I also felt very sick this week and was not up to doing a fruit picture, so did a little transition pic. During this time I forced myself to eat some fruits so that Baby could get nutrients other than just from Panera soup.

I can’t wait to do my next post and keep catching you up so we can eventually experience this together. I love writing and sharing about life, so am thrilled to have something so fun to talk about.
